Infant dies At ZIFA Referees’ Training Seminar

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has confirmed a heartbreaking incident in which an infant passed away during a referees’ training seminar. The tragedy, which unfolded on what was expected to be a routine day of football development activities, has cast a dark shadow over the association and the wider sporting community.

In an official statement released shortly after the incident, ZIFA expressed its sorrow, confirming that one of the female participants who had attended the training session with her two children suffered the sudden and devastating loss of her infant child.

“ZIFA regrets to inform the football family and the nation of a tragic incident that occurred today during a referees’ training seminar. One of the female participants, who had attended with her two children, suffered the sudden and unexpected loss of her infant child during the day. Despite immediate efforts to render assistance, the child sadly passed away,” read part of the statement.

Police Take Over Investigations

According to ZIFA, the matter has since been referred to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), who are now handling the case in line with established legal procedures. The association further stated that it is cooperating fully with the authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the incident are properly established.

While no further details have been released on the cause of death, law enforcement officials are expected to carry out a thorough investigation, including medical examinations, to provide clarity to the bereaved family and the public.

ZIFA Support for the Family

ZIFA highlighted that immediate support was extended to the mother, who is also a trainee referee. Officials present at the seminar are said to have acted swiftly to provide assistance before professional help arrived, but despite all efforts, the child could not be revived.

“As an Association, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and respectfully ask that their privacy be observed during this difficult time. Further updates, if necessary, will be issued through official ZIFA channels,” the statement continued.

The association has since mobilised counselling services and other forms of support to comfort the grieving mother, who has been left traumatised by the sudden loss.

A Dark Day for Football

What was meant to be a day dedicated to referee education and professional development ended in tragedy, leaving participants, instructors, and the entire football fraternity in shock. Colleagues at the training seminar described the atmosphere as somber, with many struggling to come to terms with the sudden turn of events.

Referee development programmes, such as the one underway at the time of the tragedy, are a key component of ZIFA’s football calendar. They are designed to improve the skills of match officials across all levels of the game. This tragedy, however, has now overshadowed the initiative, leaving an indelible mark on those who were present.

Outpouring of Condolences

Since the news broke, messages of sympathy have poured in from across the football community. Clubs, referees, and football fans have expressed their condolences on social media, rallying behind the grieving family. Many noted that while football brings people together to celebrate life and passion, moments like this serve as a painful reminder of life’s fragility.

Sports analysts also commended ZIFA for its quick response in informing the public and for extending immediate support to the mother, while also stressing the importance of prioritising the welfare of participants during football events.

Moving Forward

While investigations into the tragedy continue, the football community has been urged to remain sensitive and respectful toward the family. ZIFA has promised transparency in sharing any necessary updates through its official platforms.

For now, the focus remains on supporting the bereaved mother and her family, ensuring they are not left alone during this incredibly difficult time. The football family, often united in celebration, is now united in grief as it mourns alongside her.

This incident has reminded many within the sport that beyond the competition and training sessions, the human side of football—players, referees, officials, and their families—remains at the heart of the game.
